    Good to see a bunch of first team players there last night standing in with the fans.

    Gonzales will need to be more consistent. Has some nice touches but not much else at this stage.

    From what you’ve seen, would you approve of his signing, or is too early to tell, he needs to given more time. He could well come good, we have to trust the judgement of those that see him every day etc etc....

    2 down..'aguero' sloppy..a sorry looking bunch of trialists. Ashton have an 18yo left sided midfielder called Callum Dolan who looks better than what we have got.

    Would you give Aguero a contract on what you’ve seen?

    He runs about, doesn't tackle or create anything. Wouldn't surprise me if we signed him.

    Great result that after being 2 down...and away from home

    Sets us up nicely for the next few games, really think we can build on this and push on from here

    You’ve been practicing that. That’s very good. I’ve got a long way to go to get to that level. Bravo.

    Number 9 trialist striker second half is absolutely woeful.

    This goalkeeper needs to be second choice, not very convincing at all.

    How does it go....?

    Its only a friendly, it’s meaningless. We’re having a look at triallists, doesn’t mean we’ll sign them. You’ve got to give them time to settle.

    Am I doing it right?

  5. For the remainder of this week, we'll take a look at tactics & mind games.

    What sort of Predictor will you be? Can you be objective, or do Royal Blue tinted glasses cloud your judgement?

    In the most recent campaign, Latics registered 16W, 14D and 16L, amassing 62 points.

    W = Win, D = Draw, L = Loss, X = Null/Void, P = Pts equivalent.

    The predictor(s) who most closely predicted our team's fortunes, were;

    @disjointed 15W, 20D, 9L, 1X = 65P. @disjointed finished 4th in the Premier League.

    @Brisbaneblue 17W, 11D, 8L, 10X = 62P. @Brisbaneblue 17th in League One.

    @Nohairdontcare 15W, 15D, 15L, 1X = 60P. @Nohairdontcare 6th in League One and promoted to the Championship via the Play Offs.

    The predictors with the most positive disposition were;

    @L1onheartNew 44W, 0D, 0L, 2X = 132P. @L1onheartNew finished 13th in League One.

    @mick26 39W, 2D, 3L, 2X = 119P. @mick26 finished 5th in League One, missed out on Promotion in the Play Offs, but won the OWTB Prediction League Cup.

    @maximus1267 39W, 1D, 4L, 2X = 118P. @maximus1267 finished 8th in League One.

    The most negative predictors amongst us were;

    @Oafc1895 9W, 16D, 18L, 3X = 43P. @Oafc1895 finished 12th in the Championship.

    @dannyboy55555 12W, 6D, 21L, 7X = 42P. @dannyboy55555 finished 10th in League One.

    @JoeP 4W, 12D, 29L, 1X = 24P. @JoeP finished 14th in the Premier League.

    Finally, @BP1960 employed what is affectionately known as @disjointed's rule, by predicting a 1-1 draw, 0-0 at HT on 43 occasions, with 3 null/void predictions. It didn't work though, @BP1960 finished 7th in the Championship missing out on the Play Offs.

    It's not quite as straight forward as meets the eye is it?

  6. Remember Jonathan Burn? Centre half. Came in on loan from Middlesbrough the season of the Darren Kelly debacle. He reminded me of Richard Jobson in the few games I saw him play. Anyway, I knew he went to Bristol Rovers.... he's now at Darlington, via York, in the Conference North. Wonder what happened. I thought he'd go on.....

  8. Before I complete the '18/19 OWTB Cup story, it won't have gone unnoticed that the site was down for a period on Friday and Saturday. The mods/folk who run this site for the benefit of us all, do so for the love of it & for free / have to dip into their own pockets from time to time to keep it running and free for us all to use. For a mere fiver, you can join Prediction League and at the same time contribute to the running costs of OWTB.

    As well as those I've tagged into posts above, it would be great to see some more of those who frequent the site joining to make Prediction League even more of a success;

  9. 2 weeks tomorrow and we KO the 2019-20 Prediction League season.

    Today, I thought we'd begin having a look at the OWTB Cup. Think of it as the FA Cup of Prediction League.

    2018-19 witnessed a record 57 Predictors sign up, so the format of the early round(s) was a group stage. A bit like the World Cup, but with no seeding. All divisions mixed up by chance in a draw that is taped and broadcast on OWTB to ensure no foul play. More on that later.

    OWTB Cup games begin in January and end in May and coincide with standard League games, the schedule of which @Stevie_J will inform us of in good time. Potential replay weeks - for later knockout rounds - are also accounted for, such is the excellent administration.

    This means that while Predicting for standard League points, you will be competing against 1 other Predictor in the OWTB Cup at the same time during these weeks. It makes for interesting tactics & mind games, something we'll look at next week.

    During 2018-19, the following games counted as OWTB Cup group stage games;

    Date - Opponent - Correct Prediction

    9/2 Crawley (a) - 0-3 [0-0] Branger 2,058

    12/2 Yeovil (h) - 4-1 [1-0] Baxter 3,868

    16/2 Crewe (h) - 1-1 [1-0] Lang 5,288

    Following all group games, the tables stood as per below, with  the top 2 in each group, plus the 2 best 3rd place finishers progressing to the 2nd round, or Round of 16.

    You can't deny it's well run can you? Come on, get yourself signed up. It's well worth it.

  10. What happens to the money raised from your £5 entrance fee you might ask.

    Firstly, in memory of Dave Stringer aka @opinions4u, a respected OWTB member/contributor and whom the Latics Forum is on OWTB is affectionately named after, 50% of the money raised will be donated to his chosen charity, The Roy Castle Lung Cancer  Charity: https://www.roycastle.org/

    Secondly, OWTB is run/managed by volunteers and is an independent / free fans forum that (if you're reading this) I assume - like me - you value. 50% of the money raised from Prediction League will be donated to OWTB running costs;

    Just to correct this, no he couldn’t. There’s a 99-yr covenant on the land the club sits on which states it has to be used for leisure and recreational purposes. Granted that doesn’t mean a football club but it certainly doesn’t mean houses or a Tesco.

    ....he could seek to remove the football club - for not honouring the terms of its lease/rent, which indefensibly Marco isn’t doing - and look to redevelop it for commercial gain.... I’m sure, with appropriate sweeteners, he could find a way of developing it into a housing estate... he’s already done so on some of it / has planning permission to do more....

    I seriously doubt it’s to much of an advantage. He’s been propping Corney up for years.

    .....he was to blame for leaving Corney in charge though... they - TTA - could’ve sold lock, stock & barrel on more than one occasion, but were asking silly money.... I hope the FLG have made him see sense on price.... although I fear not.

    I agree, but I can’t see them being that honest about it.  It would pretty much confirm that their statements thus far are disingenuous at best.

    Honest about what? Saying they want to oust the owner of the football club? That would be one hell of an aggressive objective to announce. I wouldn’t go public with that, even if I harboured those thoughts....

    ....Blitz wants to sell the land.... he could develop houses / flog it to amazon/Tesco et al.... Marco hasn’t got the money to buy it.... so this group have stepped in (they may require funding) to save it from that outcome. If Marco ran the club properly - you cannot argue that he does - then they may be happy to park any ambition to oust him, even if they ultimately would like to.

    If Marco is running the club in such a way that we run the risk of admin/liquidation, then the FLG being his landlord may just be the thing that saves the club in the end.

    Right........ we've just witnessed some of the most drab football in years (last season) with teams that wouldn't look out of place in a pub league - and we were still miles off being good enough. It looks like civil war is looming between the owner and the FLG (and Lord knows what the consequences of that will be), we've treated loyal club servants like Peter Clarke in an appalling manner, witnessed an ever faster management merry go round, season ticket sales are down, you can't sit in our shiny new stand for pre-season friendlies (and let's see what happens when the season starts!)........... I could go on and on but it's ok.... I`ll take your word that things are better.

    Do you know anything of my posting history on here?

  15. 6 minutes ago, wiseowl said:

    We were relegated to the "4th division" under AL. Things are far worse now than ever they were under Corney.

    League position isn’t the only measure.... we were close to administration under Corney - we may not be far off with Marco either (we don’t know the relative health of club’s finances as he doesn’t submit them)....  but there is a scenario whereby the finances are now better and that would mean - regardless of league position & the dubious transfer policy being employed - things are not worse.

  16. There are some OWTB personalities missing from the Prediction League participants list from over the years, it would enhance the competition & be great to have some of the following involved;
